Although I
knew of
The Stumps,
I was too young to get in to see them.
The prettiest girl in my school had a
crush on Mark so I hated him, but When The
Stumps opened for
Steppenwolf at
Hara Arena
I was there and now I am one of them!
I went to see Help! in the summer of 1965 and my fate was decided. When I saw the mania inside that Lowe's theater I knew playing music was for me. I took a broom and cut rubber bands for strings and pretended to be Paul with my friends. In 1967 I got a bass and amp and I taught myself how to play it. The coolest kid in school was a drummer and immediately asked me to join a band. He wouldn't talk to me before that. I started playing for pay in 1969. At band practices I used to get behind the drums on breaks and the drummers would say, "You should play the drums". So I would take their broken sticks and practice on the furniture. I used to beat my legs red with my hands and dribble on my desk constantly at school.
In
1974, I played in
Good Friends
with original Stumps drummer, Tom Davis, and I started working as a DJ at
The She where they would stop the music between songs and the DJ would yak.
I put a stop to that and kept the music going constantly and also created a
big opening to start the night with. It had not been done before.
They also
had a drummer and we used to trade jobs during certain songs. This is when I
became a drummer. I was the drummer there and at Dixie Electric Company in
Hamilton for a while, before disco. In the late 70's when it exploded on to
the scene I escaped to work at Dingleberry's. The owner, Greg Savage, used
to book The Stumps and I helped make that store the
Number One
independant music retail outlet in Ohio.
In 1980 I
joined The Lovers.
We went to Japan and established local attendance records. One of
Dayton's most popular bands ever. I Joined Visionaries in 1985. We won a
contest at WOXY beating out
Guided By Voices
among others and released a single that was included on WEBN's album project
and was also played on WTUE and many college stations. We were one of
Refraze studio's early pet projects. Gary King was our producer and Mark
assisted him and that's where I first met him. Mark and I then
played together in Norman Dee & The Beachheads which was one of the
first local "oldies" bands.
I met John De Boer in 1989 when we played together in Brothers Rock.
In the early 90's I was the Director Of Communications for Yellow Cab.
In the mid 90's I was in Electric Range with Peter Bradstreet, a former Stumps member.
In the second half of the 90's I ran sound for Fannigan's Isle and performed children's shows with Tom Scheidt, a former Stumps member, and ended the decade with Tommy & The Moondogs.

The last few years have been with The Cherry Bomb and The Elderly Brothers.
I'm happy to be part of The Stumps family and I feel blessed to be able to play music and love to make people happy when doing it. I'm told I have good energy onstage.
Come see for yourself!!!
